BRUNO MATHSON PRIZE 2013
STAFFAN HOLM

x

Bruno Mathsson Prize for 2013 goes to Staffan Holm. Bruno Mathsson established the prize 30 years ago to support and encourage all young designers in Scandinavia. Bruno Mathsson Prize has become one of the most prestigious design awards with a prize sum of 250,000 SEK.

Mathsson Foundation says in the motivation:
The understanding of craftsmanship and materials and the confidence to trust his feelings are parameters that drive Staffan Holm design work. Like Bruno Mathsson he masters his tools, has the power to lift his ideas and has the artistic boldness to push the boundaries in order to achieve innovation with low-key qualites.

Vandalorum Museum director Elna Svenle, Staffan Holm, Bruno Mathsson foundation board member Håkan Sjöman

In her presentation of Staffan Holm, Bruno Mathsson foundation board member Hedvig Hedqvist writes:
The stackable stool Spin is three-legged and has a famous predecessor but at the same time a totally unique radiance. The secret is in the leg construction. A structure that reveals that the author against all odds endeavoured a solution, which already on the drawing board seemed impossible. There are many unwritten rules about what can be done with wood. And laminating and bending veneer in two directions can be perceived as wasteful. The point of the stools wood technology construction, except that it is elegant, is that it hardly invites copying.

Joiner’s art and the love of wood have been present as long Staffan Holm can remember. And the carpenter’s bench has been close to him since childhood. There were also role models. Grandpa was a carpenter, skilled at carving figures. Grandma encouraged early on carpentry grandson, gave him a lathe so that he could soon start experimenting at home in the basement. The dream was to become a cabinetmaker. Staffans journeyman’s work is a cupboard in cherry wood with finger-jointed drawers and intarsia inlays. Still the idea of becoming a furniture designer didn’t occur to him yet. Rather, it was something meditative in the slow woodworking process and the tactile experience of wood that attracted. Eventually however, the realization that one could become a designer started to pull. After the third request, he was admitted at HDK, Gothenburg and ended up in a world where especially the dialogue with all involved peers came to give unexpected impulses, broadened interest in design and the ideas of sustainable development. As it is not enough just with shapes controlled by practical function.
It’s always important to talk about the feeling. It must be included in any project, explains Staffan Holm.

Inspired by extendable scissor lift trucks, the genius construction lets the shelf become fully extracted in a matter of seconds and gives the shelf its special appearance. Lift is a contemporary solution to today’s sometimes-problematic assembly of shelf units. Lift challenges the norms of flat packing by requiring next to no assembly at all. Upon arrival the compact shelf is pulled up, almost unfolding by itself, and then locked it into place. The Lift shelf is made in solid ash with sides in power coated steel.

The shelf can be wall-mounted or placed directly on the floor. Lift shelf comes in black and white.

w 72cm, h 80cm, d 35cm

Lift will be on display at One nordics exhibition JUICE during Milan Design Week. Open 11.00-21.00, 8-14.4. The address is Via Maiocchi 5/7

The Finnish/Swedish design brand One Nordic has come up as a breath of fresh air with new ideas about how to buy and sell furniture.

PRESSIMAGES

One Nordics innovative approach to unassembled quality furniture creates many opportunities for designers with a weakness for quirky solutions.

I was intrigued when I was challenged to develop a shelf system, minimal in transportation size with no hassle assembly and a modern timeless appearance. The inspiration immediately turned to extendable scissor lift trucks. The genius construction lets the shelf become fully extracted in a matter of seconds and gives the shelf its special appearance.

The system can be freestanding, built in all directions or hung from the wall, making it a formidable resource when planning a home, office or restaurant.

Looking forward so meeting you in Stockholm Furniture Fair at the One Nordic stand in A07:20

The idea behind this table is to create a feeling of a balance act that generates an interesting appearance to the table. The detailing of the legs being split and bent is inspired by basket making and becomes the fascinating hallmark of Split dining table.

BRANCH CHAIR - Inspired by the way that branches attach to a tree trunk, this chair is made out of bent solid wood. The technology behind bending wood this extreme is called Compwood, a method where heated wood is being compressed lengthwise making the fibers very flexible and bendable. Don’t be lured by the simple expression of Branch chair. This is one of the most technically challenging wood chairs ever made.
SUPERBOWL - Inspired by the fantastic renaissance still life paintings, Superbowl takes one step away from being a fruitbowl in any traditional sense. In the renaissance paintings one can see the most elaborate compositions of fruit and all props are there to enhance the appearance of the fruit. Superbowl, with its humble shape creates a scene where it can showcase its content without compromising with having a strong sculptural form even when empty.

SPLIT TABLE – MUUTO

A table with an organic expression and to combine a structural solidity with a seemingly more delicate balancing act. The detail of the legs being split and bent has the expression and quality of a skilled cabinet-maker and is likely to become a hallmark of the Split Table.

Spin stool is the result of a collaboration together with Swedish company Swedese. Spin is a stackable lightweight stool that stacks in a spiral for as high as you dare. The laminated veneer legs are bent in two directions and after many experiments and a great deal of effort we were pleased to present Spin at the 2011 Stockholm Furniture Fair.

Atlas, Dining table

Staffan Holm, 2011

Solid ash wood, laminated ash veneer, stained hard wax oil

The image of Atlas carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders comes to mind when you see the legs of this dining table. By combining three pieces of laminated wood into a leg pair, the legs obtain unparallel strength and lightness that creates a strong character to this table.

Tete á tete, Pepper mill

Staffan Holm, 2011

Ash wood, stainless steel container, ceramic mill, stained hard wax oil

Inspired by the French expression, this pepper mill plays with the meeting between the handle and container. The three variants represent black pepper, white pepper and salt.

Spira, Candelabrum

Staffan Holm, 2011

Steel, powdercoating

Old laboratory equipment is the inspiration for this candelabrum. The arms are adjustable in height and angle with a simple twist of the lock screw making this into a very versatile candleholder.

Forward, Clothes hanger

Staffan Holm, 2011

Solid ash, steel pipe, enamel paint.

This versatile wall-hanged clothes hanger is just as much a sculpture as a clothes hanger. The rings inspire to be freely placed on the wall and will lighten up any room with its playfulness and interesting combination possibilities.

D ´Albe, Stool

Staffan Holm, 2011

Solid ash wood, laminated ash veneer, stained hard wax oil

Often there is much inspiration to be found in objects that were created for practical use, but became beautiful or interesting by coincidence. This stool is inspired by so called ”Duc d’Albe’s”; old anchoring tripods hammered into the bottom of the harbor and these days mostly popular social spots for the seagull community.

The Precious project addresses the significance of sentimental values in our interaction with artifacts and the importance of emotional function rather than practical.

The hypothesis of this project is; that an artifact only truly becomes interesting once it has had significance for another human. And the traces that have been left are our inheritance and the link to the past.

Patina isn’t just a dent in a tabletop or a handle worn shiny, it represents life. Patina is a mighty thing, a significant link to our history and the ones who were here before us.

The Precious project focuses on patina and narrative repairs of artefacts imbued with sentimental value. Sentimental value has the power to create immense bonds between man and artefact. These artefacts may represent important periods of one’s life, may remind you of people you’ve met, or may even be the only thing you have left from a dear friend. Priceless, but invisible, they sit in your home. Until the disaster hits and it breaks. One must then face a number of interesting choices; should it be repaired or not? How? And which material should be used? It’s when an artefact like this gets mended, the sentimental values become visual. The accident isn’t the end; it’s merely the beginning of a new chapter where the repairs become narrative clues to the history of the artefact and its owner. Therefore the disaster may well be the best thing that ever happened to it. With this in mind I have taken the repairs and the material choices very seriously and this project have been executed with great attention to permanence, exclusive quality and care.

Precious has resulted in a series of experimental repairs that includes a span of techniques from craftsmanship to the most advanced manufacturing techniques there are. These narrative repairs have the opportunity to not only visualise the emotional values, but enhance the actual value of the artefact.

The collection consists of three product families that are inspired by old manufacturing techniques. Laminating wood, casting iron and the extremely clever dovetail joint.

Spin stool

(Now in production with Swedese)

The old pioneers of the laminating technique Eames, Alto, Mathsson shaped our time in a profound way though their hard work. But what has happened with the techniques since then? There are many old thruths about what can and cannot be done and this stool is a tribute to the old masters through pushing the limit of what is possible once again. The legs of the stool is bent in two directions in a way that simply isn’t possible. And still here it is.

Spot table and stools

(now in production with Källemo)

The dovetail joint is one of the oldest joining techniques in history but is seen as obsolete and will soon be forgotten when new and cheaper methods are developed. This is a modern way of using this genius method.

Hangover

The weight of the cast iron foot enables a very small footprint and the ash rods are loose until twisted down the hole.

The desk is mine and Johannes Tjernbergs contribution to HDK’s exhibition theme ”Grow up”.

When we get older we have the tendency to stagnate. The childhood’s unreserved creativity, freedom and playfulness are forgotten. When we get older we become more boring, proper and serious. For us as designers the most important tool is our playfulness. With our playfulness we are able to solve design problems in new and unexpected ways.

Through preserving the inner child, we make our work more free and fun and it gets easier for us to show our feelings.
CEO is a desk for a powerful person that reflects on a glimpse of the lost childhood, when life was easier and freer. We want to invite the director to a journey back to a time when life was filled with playfulness, more fun and when he or she was better at showing their feelings.

CEO is made up with solid beech, MDF and it is painted with Steinway finished enamel paint.

Visp is a collaboration with south Swedish producer Blå Station.

A clothes hanger is not merely a hanger, but rather it is a sculpture that you can hang clothes on. It must look interesting both with and without anything hanging on it. The shape of Visp is inspired rhythmic gymnastics and old whisks. The spiral is one of the most intriguing shapes because of the fluidity and complexity combined with a paradox sense of simplicity. The beauty of Visp is that the simple line that becomes a intriguing spiral that bends around creates a sculpture that will brighten any room without taking over completely.

Milk stool is inspired by traditional craftsmanship but is made by a high tech CNC router.

Order it here: order@staffanholm.com

The industrialization of furniture manufacture has given us cheaper more uniform furniture. In the process many interesting aspects of craftsmanship were neglected in order to keep profit as high as possible. My opinion is that furniture that took time, effort and care to create is better storytellers and are far more likely to stand the test of time than cheap industrially made ones.

Since craftsmanship takes time and time is expensive, I would like to reintroduce some of the old thoughts on how to join wood. But instead of fighting progress, I use the new CNC possibilities of creating complex surfaces to shine a light on the old ways.

I give you Milk stool, a simple stool with one foot in the past and the other in the future.
